Parasite survey: half-timbering and damp in Alsatian buildings

Strasbourg’s heritage rests heavily on wood: the timber frames of half-timbered houses, old roof structures, floors and joists of Neustadt buildings. This stock is exposed to wood-boring insects, longhorn beetles and woodworm, as well as to dry rot, the fungus that thrives in the poorly ventilated cellars and walls of the historic centre.

The damp continental climate and rising moisture particularly weaken old ground floors and basements. While not always compulsory, a parasite survey is strongly advised before selling an older property in Strasbourg, to reveal termites, wood borers and fungal growth before they reach the structure.
